The three ways to clean water

Draining is the blunt option. It clears everything at once, including what guests have left in the water, but the pool stops earning while it refills and guests wander off to something else.

Clean dirty water with chlorine: the Yogi step

One of the Yogi quests asks you to clean dirty water with chlorine, and the counter wants five of them. Chlorine is a research unlock (it arrived in the Splash & Dash update of October 2025, which put it plainly: as your pool changes colour, either empty it or use chlorine). The catch is the word dirty. Throwing a bottle into clear water does nothing for the counter; in Late Game Energy's full questline run, the first throw into a clean pool did not count, and the ones that did all went into water that had already turned.

1. 1Research chlorine at the research table if you have not already, then buy a few bottles — you need five successful throws.
2. 2Find a pool whose water has changed colour. Brown or yellowish water is the target; a pool that merely looks busy is not.
3. 3Hold a bottle, walk to the pool edge and throw it in. The step ticks up by one per dirty pool you clear.
4. 4Repeat until the counter reads 5/5, then go back to the Yogi for the next step.

• Throw trash bags in. Empty a full bin and toss the bags into one pool; a player in the same thread reported the water turns quickly and goes dirty again if you leave the bags there, so you can clear the same pool more than once. If you are also on the recycle dumpster step, burn those bags afterwards rather than leaving them in the water.
• Wait for a guest to pee. One player found chlorine after a pee accident counted almost every time, while poop was less reliable; in the Late Game Energy run a poop pool counted only once the water had gone properly brown.
• Pull the toilets. The same run deleted every bathroom so guests had to go in the pools — it works, but rebuild them straight after, because guests with nowhere to go drag your rating down.
• Play on Easy? Since update 0.4.22 (28 May 2026), pools need chlorine more often while this mission is active, so it should not stall. Details are on the difficulty page.

Why you may never see chlorine

Water quality degrades from use and from guests behaving badly in it. A park with enough cleaners keeps that under control automatically, which is why some players reach late game without ever handling chlorine at all.

Players chasing the Yogi's chlorine step have resorted to firing cleaners so the water gets dirty enough to require treatment. That tells you the trigger is the water's actual state rather than a timer or a quest step — and that trash bags are the quicker route, as above.

One thing that used to make this harder has been fixed: chlorine and shop supplies no longer despawn when you quit and reload the game, so stock you bought stays where you left it.

Water is part of your park rating

Everything you do affects the park's overall rating — cleanliness, how fun the slides are, and the quality of your food and amenities. Pool water sits squarely in the cleanliness half of that.

Happier guests stay longer, spend more, and come back. That makes cleaning one of the few chores in this game with a direct revenue payoff rather than just being maintenance you resent.

• Check pool water as part of your rating checks, not just trash on the ground.
• More guests means more contamination, so upkeep scales with success.
• Station cleaners near your busiest pools rather than spreading them evenly.
• Graffiti cleanup earns research points as well as protecting the rating — it is the best-value chore in the game.

Guests are the source of the problem

The game is explicit that you will be scooping mess out of pools, and guest behaviour is designed to generate it. Some guests have bad traits and will actively make things worse.

Security staff, added in the 1.0 release, eject unruly guests, which reduces the mess at its source rather than cleaning up after it. If a specific pool keeps going bad, more security nearby is a more durable fix than another cleaner.

There is also a mechanical answer for guests who are causing trouble in the water: the water gun. It is one of the most useful tools in the game, and the standard early recommendation is to unlock it as soon as you can.

One kind of guest cannot be cleaned into behaving. Visitors with rubbish visibly floating around them are a trait, not a state: the developer's description, when a player asked why the water gun did nothing to them, was "visitors that are bound to create trash everywhere", and the 28 August update added an in-game pop-up explaining these trashers. The water gun clears smelly guests, not this. Players' answer is blunter — one reported on 8 September that hitting them with the sledgehammer makes the trash vanish — and the park-cleanliness warning in the corner will keep firing until they leave or you deal with them.

Automating the chore

On PC there are mods that take this work off you entirely. The popular ones auto clean and repair everything in the park, or instantly complete clean, repair, destroy and build actions.

Those are among the most-downloaded uploads on Nexus Mods, which tells you something about how the community feels about pool maintenance at scale. They are PC-only — console players do this by hand.
